About this experience

Bereavement support

Support through grief We are here for you. Losing someone close can turn life upside down from one moment to the next. Many people receive support from family, friends or neighbours. Conversations, practical help or simply sitting together in silence can provide steadiness. Yet many bereaved people also describe loneliness or a feeling that others do not understand their grief. Some withdraw because they worry about overwhelming those around them with their feelings. Bereavement support provides a safe space in which all of these feelings are welcome. It is for anyone who would value additional support, whether or not they have people around them. Support can take many forms, including individual conversations, group sessions or help from specialist practitioners. Larger cities in particular now offer a wide range of services, including peer-support groups, advice centres, hospices, therapeutic services and trained practitioners experienced in grief. The aim is not to „get over“ grief, but to integrate it into life and gradually find a new sense of steadiness. There is a particular focus on support around the funeral, beginning with the death of the person you love and continuing through to the burial. During this time, bereaved families are helped to find a form of farewell that feels right. This includes decisions about viewing the body, the type of funeral, the design of the service and its timing, creating space for a conscious and personal goodbye.
