Cryonics and eternal life

About this experience

Cryonics and eternal life

Hoping for a second life: we plan the arrangements and support you through them. The people involved, optimistically called «patients» by cryonics companies, are cooled with iced water immediately after clinical death to slow the breakdown of tissue, particularly in the brain. Artificial ventilation and cardiac massage continue while emergency teams take the body to the cryonics centre as quickly as possible. In an operating theatre, antifreeze is fed into the arteries while the body's fluids are gradually removed. This process, known as vitrification, is also used when freezing human eggs and is intended to prevent damaging ice crystals from forming in the cells. Over the following two weeks, the body is cooled slowly to minus 196 degrees. It is then lowered head first into a large cylinder of liquid nitrogen, so that if nitrogen leaks during an emergency the sensitive brain remains cooled for longest, as an employee explains in a video tour. Tiny nanorobots might one day be able to repair cells damaged by cryopreservation, ageing or illnesses such as cancer.
